MONDAY
I haven’t done an athlete profile in a while, but decided it was time to start up again. I originally started featuring members on the blog so everyone could get to know each other at Thor Fitness that they might not workout with or maybe they do workout with them but don’t really know too much about them. After all, it’s all about the community here at Thor Fitness. So, let’s check out Stephanie’s profile.
STEPHANIE
1.Where do you live? Smithtown
2. What brought you to Thor Fitness?
I had some interest in CrossFit about 5 years ago. When I lived in Center Moriches, I would drive past one on the way to work. I had no idea what it was, though, so I asked on FB. The answer I got was that it was a highly intense military-like training. So of course, I was like no way, not for me. Fast forward a few years to the fall of 2014. I was with my sister, Val and my brother-n-law Pat at their house (who are also Thor Fitness members). They mentioned that they are trying out this thing called CrossFit. I remember saying something like, I can’t believe you’re doing this. It’s so expensive. Are you going to join? But deep down, I think I was jealous that they were doing this. I was at a low-point in my life. I would say I was depressed. I was overweight and definitely not happy with how I looked or felt. I would look at pictures of myself and be so disappointed in how I looked. I would lay in bed until about 9 am, then get up just to say good bye to my kids before they left for school. I had no motivation. I was a member at a local gym, but NEVER went. Not even once. So, Val and Pat mentioned a special that Patty was having at her gym. They pushed me to sign up and give it a try. I thought about it and said I have nothing to lose.
Joining Thor Fitness definitely was a culture shock for me in the beginning. Meaning, I never lifted weights before and had no idea what a deadlift was. I never did a burpee in my life and haven’t picked up a jumprope since I was a kid. But eventually, I got used to all the moves. I bought the CrossFit shoes, the Junk headbands, and the wrist wraps and I made it official: I was now a CrossFitter and I wasn’t going to quit!
Joining Thor Fitness was the best thing I have done for myself in a very long time. I thank Val and Pat for pushing me to try something that I thought was not fit for me, but found out CrossFit is really fit for everyone. I am proud of myself for sticking with this and I could never imagine doing something else.
3.What were your goals? Have you achieved them?
My goal when joining CrossFit was to lose weight. I have lost weight, but I still have a little bit more to go. My other goal, is to get stronger. I’m definitely stronger then when I first joined, but would like to continue with the progress.
4.What do you do when I am not at the gym?
I am a mother of 2 young boys and I also work FT as an Ultrasound Sonographer at Good Samaritan Hospital. When the kids are off from school, we go Upstate to our cabin in the Adirondacks. But, what I do the most when I am not at the gym, is think about being at the gym! I hate missing a workout and as much as I love vacations, I hate being away from the gym for more than 2 or 3 days.
5.What CrossFit exercise or lifts are your favorite and least favorite?
My favorite lifts are the push-press and push-jerk. I love them! Something about lifting a heavy bar over my head makes me feel empowered! My least favorite exercise is any workout that involves running. Also, I’m not a fan of the snatch squat.
