I love doing these Athlete profiles. Here is another profile from Kristen Maccarone aka Kmac. Kristen has been a part of the Thor Fitness family for two years plus. She rocks!!
Where do you live?
I lived in Holtsville my whole life with the family up until about 2 weeks ago I moved out and am now living in Ronkonkoma. I know SOO much farther then where I was…I was ready for a little change
What brought you to Thor Fitness?
ALL the credit goes to Elizabeth Gibbons on this one. If it weren’t for her I would have never tried crossfit and I would have never met some amazing people in my life so THANKS BITZ! I really had no idea what I was getting myself into but I trusted her and being that I was an athlete she said that I would love it. Oh, was she right! Its been over two years and I can’t get enough.
What were your goals? Have you achieved them?
When I first started I went into it just to change up my training style. I thought cardio was the way to go….BORING!! (no offense) I learned quickly that that was not the case. Have I achieved my goals? Hmm, let’s see. In 2 years of doing crossfit I have lost 30 pounds, I have competed in 5 crossfit competitions, and my body can now do things that I NEVER, in a million years, thought it could do, oh and ya I can do PULLUPS woohoo..that’s probably one of my biggest accomplishments. I never thought I would be able to do that!..so YES, I have absolutely achieved my goals.
What’s even greater about crossfit is that there is always something that you can improve on. My goals are never-ending. Whether it is getting 100# power snatch (UGH I HATE SNATCHES) or stringing more than 2 pullups it never ends. There is aLWAYS ways to improve each and every day.
What do you do when you are not at the gym?
When I am not at the gym I am either teaching or coaching. I am, well I was, a physical education teacher in Sachem School District. Unfortunately, this past June, I was excessed after year 2 of teaching due to the budget cuts. Currently, I am working as the lifeguard at the high school hoping and praying that next year I will be teaching again! I also coach girls basketball and lacrosse at the middle school level and volunteer coach with Sachem East girls varsity basketball. My dream is to coach basketball at the varsity level and I am hoping that happens soon along with the teaching job
What crossfit exercise or lifts are your favorite and least favorite?
My favorite lift/exercise is overhead squats..I like when any type of squat is in a wod but when its overhead squats I get really excited! Lately, Ive also been happy when I see handstand push ups in a workout. Not because I am good at them b/c I am far from it BUT the fact that I can finally modify them with 2 mats makes me really happy so I get excited when I see them. It’s fun flipping over and doing hand stands against the wall My least favorite exercise is the snatch…power snatch, hang snatch, squat snatch, I hate it! I am going to admit it..I hate it because I am horrible at them…my form, technique, everything is just off..its my fault though. I refuse to work on it bc I get very frustrated…I guess we now know what I should be working on when Patty says work on your GOAT..Now that I am letting everyone know that I need to work on it maybe I’ll really start practicing…MAYBE!
Any other tid bit info…
What do I even say…CrossFit has changed my life! When I am having an off day Thor Fitness is where I go to fix that. Thank you Bitz for talking me into joining. If it weren’t for you I would have never met Patty and all of the other amazing members at Thor Fitness. Because of CrossFit I have built life long friendships. I don’t think I will EVER leave this place. This is my life now.
